While I respect the effort, you don't even need that many examples. Making something illegal does stop the thing.
Speeding. Drug use. Theft. Murder. Parking in the cripple spot.
Those things happen constantly and they're all against the law.

Thumbs up on the M1a. Buy rifles that use military calibers for the availability of ammo. ARs are easy to shoot for most shooters to 300yds-everything from 300-600 is range estimation because of bullet drop. Do your practice sessions in different positions with no shooting bench and shoot paper targets. Prepare to get your feelings hurt!
