For about a century, our country has made money (the large majority of it's income) on its own people through taxation.

It appears that our President is reversing this trend or using his power to influence it anyway.

The question is why?

The immediate answer is to rectify who runs the world's economy.

Then, we look at when tariffs were at their highest during the last century: typically during or right before times of war.

The other apparent effort appears to be abolishing the IRS. That's a quick conclusion, ay? Well, increasing tariffs means that he can then justify decreasing income taxes. Depending on how long he's in office, this can surely mean that he's going after the IRS.

You're insane if you think this is going to happen.

You may say that I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.

I think he just wants to do away with tariffs completely and increasing tariffs on other countries is possible way to make them drop tariffs. Income taxes ain't going anywhere.
