This very fact can lead to potentially an economic depression. At what point do consumers throw up their hands and cry out "I'm not paying $3.49 for a 2-oz. bag of potato chips", or $4.59 for a Marie Callender TV dinner!
You can only raise prices so far. There's always a breaking point to where a product can't be sold at a quoted price and companies then have to shutter their doors. No one will pay $10.59 for "two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a Sesame Street bun."

This is how shortages happen. Companies don't produce things to break even or take a loss.
