SB1424 is brief. Read it:
And you thought it was just the guns.....

This bill would require any person who operates a social media, as defined, Internet Web site with a physical presence in California to develop a strategic plan to verify news stories shared on its Web site. The bill would require the plan to include, among other things, a plan to mitigate the spread of false information through news stories, the utilization of fact-checkers to verify news stories, providing outreach to social media users, and placing a warning on a news story containing false information.
(a) Any person who operates a social media Internet Web site with physical presence in California shall develop a strategic plan to verify news stories shared on its Internet Web site.
(b) The strategic plan shall include, but is not limited to, all of the following:
(1) A plan to mitigate the spread of false information through news stories.
(2) The utilization of fact-checkers to verify news stories.
(3) Providing outreach to social media users regarding news stories containing false information.
(4) Placing a warning on a news story containing false information.
(c) As used in this section, “social media” means an electronic service or account, or electronic content, including, but not limited to, videos, still photographs, blogs, video blogs, podcasts, instant and text messages, email, online services or accounts, or Internet Web site profiles or locations.

Of course, only stories that don't favor a specific ideology will be deemed to be false.
Do they define what a "news story" is? Is it only a news story if it comes from a company with a NAICS code related to news publishers? Or will they consider anything posted they don't like by anyone as a news story? Will opinion pieces be considered news stories? I'm sure they are intentionally leaving it vague so they can silence anything they disagree with.
How far are they going to take it? If GoDaddy has a physical presence in California, then every customer of GoDaddy will have to follow this ridiculous law, too, or risk being silenced?
It's sad how many people will support this.
I miss the old days of the internet where you had to be somewhat intelligent to access it and it was championed as the ultimate platform for free speech and the free spread of information.
Even shopping websites have accounts, profiles, and locations. All message boards, not matter how small, will have to follow these guidelines for every single post or face prosecution. Gaming sites like Steam, Uplay, and Battle.net have account profiles and message boards. Are they going to start requiring all these sites to search for "false news stories" as well?
This is an insane law that only authoritarians would endorse.

Yeah, there seemed to be a few in this thread supporting it.
