It is 2017. Can we not give statistics based on fat percentage instead of the archaic BMI?

No, because currently it's almost impossible to make large scale statistics based on bf %. That data doesn't exist on a large scale.

BMI is the most logical measure to use because we have a very large percentage of the populations height and weight.

That being said, yes it's true bf % is the more accurate measure, and can skew the statistics. But the number of people who fall under this category (usually athletes or lifters who have a large amount of muscle mass) is insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Maybe 1% of the population. They are outliers.

Therefore BMI is currently the best measure.

it seems like the concept of balance is completely lost in today's diet culture

eat nothing but plants!
no carbs, ever!
only high fat and protein!

Preach. Just use common sense and eat things that are minimally processed. Pasta is not going to kill you if you balance it with vegetables and lean meats

How can you let your kid become obese?

Because people think fruit loops, soft drinks, and fast food are appropriate for children and we've been conditioned to feel that way.

Really no one should eat fast food. It's ok in a pinch once in a while, but it's not a substitute for a nightly meal. Louis CK did a great bit on that.

Parents too often take the easy quick way out of parenting nowadays. It's sad.

If my kid wants to become a fat arse like his dad, so be it, but it will be his choice when he gets to college. While he's under my roof he'll be healthy

There are fruitarians out there who do well.

Name one.

Vitamin B-12 is the only thing they lack

B12 is not a trace mineral. There are tons of them that are lacking in all plant sources. That's why humans have canine incisors.
