Agreed, but if the guy's name is still legally "Richard" then it's not even debatable.

Honestly, I would have handled the whole thing differently. I would have removed the portrait entirely (as well as anything else with any reference to transgenders in the military) and my reasoning would have been, "Transgender individuals are no longer allowed to serve in the US military, and we want to remove any confusion and avoid any possible misunderstanding about that."

And my answer to the blowback would have been, "We changed the names of high schools and military bases and removed statues all across the country to end any possible perception of public endorsement of elements of our American past that we have evolved beyond, and this is no different."

I have no problem with pushing back, but I kind of agree with the guy upthread who said it seems like a weak, petty push. Almost like drawing a mustache and horns on the portrait with a magic marker when no one is looking.

If you're going to push, make it as big a shove as you can muster, I say.
