Question about college students and voting

I saw stories about students that attend North Carolina A&T "marching " to the polls on Thursday, the first day of early voting in that state.. They were "marching" because apparently the county had closed the voting Precinct on their campus.
WFDD story
I would assume that most college students vote at their home precinct, not at the location where they go to college.
I know each state is different and how they handle the situation. For example my daughter attended Auburn University but she's a registered voter in Louisiana. She would vote via absentee ballot. The state of Louisiana makes it pretty easy and accessible for out of state college students to vote in elections.
Do most college kids vote at the location where they attend college?
If they are attending college out of state, what's preventing them from being a registered voter in both their home state and the state where they attend college?
