USPS has to go out and compete with UPS and FedEx for package deliveries, yes? In order to do that, they engage in commercial negotiations. Just like UPS and FedEx. If they do a bad deal then that is on them. Just like it would be for UPS or FedEx.

If the Post Office was strictly business, the rural areas would never get their mail as it’s too inefficient traveling as far to deliver mail/ packages. As such, Fed Ex and the like literally drops off packages for the Post Office to deliver everyday. Not to mention Fed Ex and others have their own planes, and transportation. The Post Office has third party contractors that deliver the mail.
Lastly, if the Post Office wants to survive tbe age of technology, it will have to adjust. And from what I’m hearing, they’re trying to do so without having to accrue tbe massive losses that spurred the Amazon deal which kept them afloat. Apparently in some areas out west like California they are already experimenting with delivering frozen goods.

In the history of government there is not one solid example of an efficient, well run, profit making venture, directed by bureaucrats. But there are those on this board that believe the USPS is doing so now.

All of the trucks and vehicles delivering the mail with USPS painted on the side are not considered the Postal service's transportation system? Also FedEx and the other have the expenses of operating their own planes, it is not some free advantage they have over the postal service.

FedEx and UPS delivered packages to rural areas for decades before they started to contract delivery to the postal office. Many business have areas that operate at a loss as a requirement for the business to function overall.

Unless you’re talking about the LLV’s which the carriers use, then no. Contractors move the mail from post to post 98% of the time either by 2 ton or 18 wheeled freight. There are the rare occasions that the 2 ton postal vehicles deliver mail as they are merely utility vehicles used for other operations such as maintenance, recycling, or delivering in bulk to one receiving unit.
Albeit, there are times when the Post Office need the 2 tons to deliver mail if there are LLV shortages, but that’s fairly rare.

And there are glaring reasons for why they stopped. The Post Office was going that far anyway, and Fed Ex and such didn’t think it efficient to also go out there for only a few or better yet, a singular package.

Your point was that the Post Office if operated as a business would not be delivering rural mail.

"If the Post Office was strictly business, the rural areas would never get their mail as it’s too inefficient traveling as far to deliver mail/ packages"

Regardless if they have now stopped, FedEx and UPS operating as profitable businesses did it for decades.

Strictly business speaking, it wouldn’t deliver to the rural areas. The profit from urban areas easily makes up for the loss of rural areas. They are obligated to however and are not allowed to outsource unlike Fedex or UPS.

Packages remain a paltry portion (four percent) of what the postman carries. And it is not at all clear if the USPS reaps profits on carrying parcels. Boxes brought in 28 percent of USPS revenue last year.....but the agency's accounting for the costs related to carrying packages (which obviously are bulkier than letters and magazines) cannot be found in either its annual report or year-end financial statement.

It is a bloated and inefficient agency .... they have no idea whether they are making a profit with Amazon, and intentionally hide the numbers from public analysis. It will be borne out that Trump is right on point.
