"Yes, my fellow thinker", answered Rex in his customary amiable fashion, "but the effect is less painful than I think you think it to be".

Do Hunkydorians die or have children?

It looks like you have just enough clothing produced to clothe everyone. I wonder where the clothes will come from when those employed in the sweat shop textile factories move to the more lucrative and enjoyable entertainment/service industry.

There are no savers in Hunkydoria... everyone spends what they receive. Old people who are unable to work are fed, clothed, and sheltered.

Didn't you notice, there is no capitol accumulation in Hunkydoria. If there are old people, (I'm still waiting on clarification on how aging occurs on that island) they will simply be counted among the bums.

Yes... but after reaching 80,000 people, at an exact 1:1 balance.

I see you have a govt., but no one works in it. Your system is great, the less govt. workers the better.

Rex, a true conservative.

Is such balance simply fortuitous or strictly enforced by the Ministry of Population? Which I guess would be Rex, since you did not include any number as bureaucrats in your spreadsheet.

If there are no savers, then how does one get capital to start a new venture?

Government, how else?

We are about to learn in the next installment how a wonderful and profitable entertainment/service industry is conceived and funded - simply by printing money apparently.

Can't wait.

Hunkydoria is a primitive society where all vocations are labor- rather than asset-intensive, and where capital expenditures are included in the same rows and columns on simple papyrus graphs as operating expenses and items for immediate consumption, on a cash rather than accrual basis.

But in Rex's world no one works in govt.

I kind of like that part.

It is impossible to not save any money. You have to save it before you can use it...

What Rex is describing is a communist dictatorship where government seizes all the wealth and doles it out as they see fit. The enterprising and/or hard working in his land of misery do not get to enjoy the fruits of their labors, as they are taken from them (by force if necessary)and used to support the masses.

Since there is no incentive to succeed, soon everyone quits working and the economy either collapses or they have to print currency until it is worthless. Then comes the civil war and anarchy rules the land.

If the government survives the uprising, they know they will need to take ever more drastic steps to stay in power. They can no longer afford to take care of the old and infirm and form death panels to decide who is taken care of and who is not.

Even the veterans of the security forces that are hurt in the line of duty are not exempt as promises are broken and they are put off and lied to when thery seek treatment until they die.
