My folks never had to have "that talk" with me - I grew up with respect for authority annoying otherwise never had any inkling of doing otherwise.

The only thing close was when I started to school and my dad said to me - "If you get in trouble at school the first thing I will do is whip your arse. Then I will listen to what you have to say."

Of course that was back in the 40s. Then was a totally different country than now.
