Well, wasn't it racism that got him banned?

Spot on. You see in these parts, if you misunderstand the presidents proposal and call him a racist, that's fine and dandy. But call a republican black man a token, and that's considered racist and you're banned.

And btw, I disagree with Rex about 30% of the time and rarely join in on his threads. But fair is fair and there is nothing fair about him being banned as compared to what is said hourly on this board.

According to my Hawaiian roommate in college, real Hawaiians are virtually extinct anyways. When I asked why, he looked at me and said, "when you see a Hawaiian woman, you'll know why brah." He did a kind of shudder and walked away...

The natives who work in tourism related jobs (restaurants, hotels, shops and such around the coastal areas are usually pleasant on Kauai). Just don't expect happy faces and warm greetings when you drive out of the main areas. My wife and I have taken 5 two week trips to Kauai over 12 years and I learned rather quick to not drive through areas where natives live, go to school, etc.. Went on a country side cruise just last summer in the hills above Kapa'a and turned into a subdivision where a bunch of natives were outside working in their yards or hanging out with neighbors....kids shooting hoops by the street, etc.. The glares and shouts we received were very hostile. Turned around in a driveway to get the heck out and had a stick thrown from about 20 feet away that hit our rental car in the passenger door. They do not like outsiders.

I've lived in quite a few places and one thing I've learned is that people often find what they expect to find. I knew several people in Hawaii who either avoided leaving post, or always had horror stories about their interactions. The only 'incident' I had was some native guys not acknowledging me when I said hello on a hiking trail. We camped out on North Shore Oahu every weekend and had a blast with the locals.

They have bad eggs like everyone else. While I lived there, a married couple was beaten in front of their kid, over a parking spot. The people beating them up shouted "haole" at them the whole time, so the perception isn't baseless. There's also the whole 'Kill Haole Day' in public schools. That's a bit troubling.
