There are rules in place specifically for electric providers regarding cyber security. The federal government has CIP standards

What happens when an agency that is part of the federal government flips the switches and blames it on the grid being hacked?

I've got enough propane to run my whole house on generator power, full load for 12 days. Portable generators to run freezers and refrigerators past that. Plenty of food, etc. so my family will be in good shape if it happens.

And exactly what Agency has that capability?

Bonneville Power? That is the US Army Corps of Engineers dam system down the Oregon Gorge ....The name says the Federal Government owns it. I've been in every hydro production dam along that river...

I understand the pretext of attempting to offer a possible scenario ...But every comment ignores a key element of the Electric Utility Industry.

The majority of the system is Investor Owned ...The Government has no control other than regulatory. They ain't flipping switches to anything. Texas Alaska and Hawaii stand alone ....But a bigger element dictates that the suggested possibilities will fail.

The Brotherhood. Montreal loses every transmission line serving the island in one night ...The northeast goes black because of a tree limb that could be burned off.
Texas goes to rolling blackouts ...Florida hit by a hurricane ...tornados rip across the southeast ....

Every neighboring utility reacts first. Utilities with crews staged in areas outside the elements of the storm race into action.

The Utility Industry takes care of it's own, while FEMA is still picking it's butt trying to arrive as if to save the day. The Utilities are already on the scene.

Montreal was astounding example of how to address a total collapse of a system .....Engineers gathered and came up with plan ....paste together wood power poles to hang high voltage transmission lines on a temporary basis to get power back up on the island.

Sorry but having worked in the industry for more than 30 years ....The Federal Government best have tanks and troops on the ground to take out a power grid .....The line crews will make it work until somebody puts a bullet in their heads.

Federal government owns a large portion of the power grid in the southeast, TVA ring a bell.

Insider job locally may happen, but not wide scale. It's too easy to monitor people at plants.

NERC CIP standards keep sensitive equipment off the internet and confined to their own networks.

May not be a hard task. Take down 2 of the 5 major sites with long range snipers and the entire systems collapses for months. Would be the ultimate black swan event. Crash the country expect for the liberal east and west coasts. Starve and kill everybody in the middle.

You need more than just a few sites, we have alternate options. Taking down a few high voltage transformers would cause issues, but we have spares. You would need a large scale attack on many substations and power plants targeting such equipment.

One Second After is also fiction, 1 nuke bomb as an EMP on the East coast wouldn't have that effect.
