But primarily it was financial - the economy was weakening and the promise of space station were not only far in the future but the realization that return on investment for profit was not something anywhere in the foreseeable future.

We also had the Space Shuttle that became the white elephant that ate all of the peanuts.

I'd bet that SpaceX could put a permanent research station on the moon for a fraction of the money being spent on the obsolete Artemis missions.

Ever hear of the Oak Ridge TN atomic project which had 10000 workers and remained secret?

There are lots of telescopic images of the landing sites, foot prints, vehicle tracks and remaining parts for anyone that is curious that a simple internet search will reveal.

Yeah - they are not really curious - they are just used to spouting stuff out their adz for other idiots to repeat.

I can understand some teenager who questions the 'how' parts of the missions - but for an adult to host actual doubts that he cannot resolve with a minute or two of real research is baffling to me.

The moon landing started in 1969. So, all the thousands of people associated with it have been silent for 53 years. We are not talking about a top secret effort to win a war. We are talking about a major hoax.

If you believe the Moon landings were fake then your IQ is in the moron range. The people who worked in Oak ridge were confined in the desert. They were not working on a hoax. The work was highly compartmentalized and they were informed on a "need-to-know" basis. Only a few people knew what the overall project entailed. The Project was only for 3 years.

Yeah - the turnaround estimates were not correct - could never establish a launch schedule to make it pay its way. That plus the inherent risks with the tiles put more risk into the system than it was worth.
I left the program when it because 'just another job' instead of breaking exciting new barriers. When the job becomes more about staffing projections and cost cutting measures, it is no different than managing a 7-11 in terms of personal satisfaction = just bigger consequences for failure.
I started a photography studio in mid 80s and retired from space work a few years after that. Would not trade the early years of 'pushing back the foreskin of science' for anything, but do not miss the mundane management issues after that.
