This issue has nothing to do with parties. Only a real piece of shite would still support Columbus Day as a holiday. I’m of Italian descent and a Republican and I’ve been celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day as long as it’s been a thing. People like Columbus should not be celebrated. There isn’t a middle ground here.
Oh look, it's one of those anti-colonialism activists.
How does it feel when you have to explain to Mexicans and other people of mixed ancestry that their very existence is a profound and utter travesty that should have never occured?

2nd there is a middle ground.....it's called Columbus day
Here's your real middle ground:
Keep the names, the statues, the holiday--and teach history accurately. No need to ignore that he and his brothers were tyrannical, abhorred by the Spanish settlers in Hispaniola, and sent back to Spain in chains. It's crazy that for generations kids in schools learned (and maybe still learn) the Washington Irving- myth that Columbus's voyage helped to disprove the flat earth theory. The romanticized version was a means to an end for Italian-Americans but it doesn't pass the sniff test and they're no worse off for teaching history accurately.
