JROTC student Colton Haab heard gunshots, counting seven that sounded like firecrackers.

quote:

His instructor was not in the classroom, so the 17-year-old directed his 30 or so classmates to grab their belongings and walk to another JROTC class. A total of about 90 students hid in that classroom.

quote:

Haab was able to reach his brother, who was elsewhere in the school, and learned he was safe, too. He then called a retired police officer friend, who coached him and his instructor during the ordeal.

In the classroom, First Sgt. John Navarra led some students into the closet. They rolled out several backdrops used for marksmanship practice that are made of Kevlar, a similar material used in bullet-proof vests.
The students then concealed themselves behind those sheets so the gunman would not see them if he peeked through the window on the door.
While they waited, the students armed themselves with a fire extinguisher and a two-by-four. But the gunman never came.
Haab said he wishes he could have done more. A friend’s sister, who was in JROTC, Alaina Petty, 14, was killed in the shooting.

She had not been in his class at the time, Haab said.
“Honestly, I wish I could have saved more people.” he said. “I wish we could have gotten more people in the classroom.”

Great story but was the instructor in the room or not?

I’m purchasing 2 bullet-proof binder inserts for my son. When the binder is opened, it can be used as a shield when hiding under a desk.

I can't imagine how terrifying of an ordeal that must have been for those kids. We have a serious problem in this country and it goes way way deeper than having accessible firearms. It's such a simple mined argument to blame the guns rather than what in the fck is causing these kids to go off the deep end. It's time to stop worrying about hurting someone's feelings and call out shite for exactly what is.

Backpacks aren’t allowed in classrooms here in middle/high schools. Certified bullet-proof backpacks are available for $300 and would be the easiest “solution” but that won’t work for us. Binder inserts are the only option for us since binders are needed for every class.

Great idea, unfortunately.
