Jeff Landry, lawyer, smells blood in the water and wants to go after Facebook and Google

Landry on CNBC
This is just stupid. Landry is a fool to carry the water on this.
His example of making sure the consumers are getting the best pair of shoes when they buy online is just idiotic.
Somebody please tell me just what Facebook is doing (or Google or Amazon) that is different from a newspaper or TV or radio or a credit agency?
The shoe thing is just stupid. Landry wants to protect you from Google serving up a ad for a shoe that they want you to buy instead of what you want to buy!!! Why would you friggin buy a shoe you didn't want to buy? ESPN serves up ads on beer that I do not want all the time.
Somebody please give me an example of Facebook selling their specific information to an advertiser. We spend a pretty good bit on Google and Facebook and have never been able to target individuals by name or buy information by name. (Credit bureaus have sold us such information before and nobody seems to care about that.)

Who are the freedom hating people here that wants the government to punish Facebook and Google for selling advertising???

I may have fun at your expense from time to time, but KCT is generally just kind of a bitter person, and I agree with him on a lot, but he's always in an attack mode and should just chill a little and join in a conversation instead of creating a wreck with his road rage style.
Is that the best you can do??
Ad hominen incoming in 3...2...1...

Have you ever dreamt of a post having more upvotes than downvotes?
Is orangeman still bad?

I don't doubt they are getting sued all the time with Landrys around.

They will sell your name, address, telephone number, home size, credit history, family size, ect. to any marketer with the $$$$. None of that is available from Facebook and none of it is personalized.
One can target people that like Tigerdroppings for example but they can't target IceTiger on Facebook.

I post on the news of the day that I want to post on.
You are a big government loving fool if you think Landry is right on this.
Do you have something to add to the thread or did you just come to whine????

Who gives a s*** about upvotes and downvotes??? Downvotes on my thread are just a reflection of the government loving, American hating folks that post here and are to expected.

This is Landry just reminding us how bad he wants to be governor one day. His term as AG is been full of grandstanding i can't wait to see how he uses all of this to run for governor. Just a prime example of another fake GOP conservative.

Were the shoes made in China?
Posted on 3/19/19 at 10:01 am to hawkeye007
He best be careful---the demographics of facebook in Louisiana are the voters republicans depend on. They love the platform.
It could be worse than a democrat going after the Times Picayune.

Would you want a government that would keep Chinese made shoes from advertising on google???? (there is a New Chic ad on TD right now as I type that I guarantee is for shoes made in China. Are you going to boycott TD because there are ads here for Chinese made goods that Chicken profits from???)

The one small argument I’ll counter with (just for the sake of discussion moreso than actually disagreeing with you) is the possibility that producers are able to better price discriminate with the information they acquire from platforms like Facebook. Not perfect price discrimination, but still, better.
As data collection and analysis accelerates, these platforms may be able to give producers a venue to effectively differentiate willingness to pay differences in various demographics, allowing the same product to be sold for a larger range of prices to different consumer groups. They could more easily advertise the product at one price for groups willing to pay more and a lower price for groups less willing to pay. Economists would say that this price discrimination leads to an increase in producer surplus at the expense of consumer surplus. But in plain speak, that argument essentially just boils down to firms finding ways to be more profitable. And I’m not sure it’s appropriate for government to prevent that, even if it’s done for the sake of protecting consumers.
But long answer short, you don’t need to target individual consumers; differentiating consumer groups by willingness to pay still creates the opportunity to distort the markets heavily in the producer’s favor. I don’t think we’re quite there yet, but I also don’t think we’re far off from it.

People on this board simply don't like FB and Google based on their politics so actual principles are out the window.
People don't like you because they disagreed with your position on tariffs so anything you post, regardless of content, is met with insults and no substance.
Such is the poliboard.

So Landry has a problem with parishes suing Big Oil for coastal erosion, but no problem with suing Big Tech for... whatever theory of liability he tried to convey with the shoe example?
I never knew Republicans loved lawsuits so much . This is great.
