- Enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1969
- Graduated from Central Washington Unviersity with a Bachelors of Arts in History.
- Commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the Marine Corps through ROTC from the same university.
- Served as a rifle and weapons platoon commander in the 3rd Marine Division.
- Served as a rifle and weapons company commander in the 1st Marine Regiment.
- Commanded the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines as a Lieutenant Colonel; his battalion participated in the Persian Gulf War (1991).
- Served as the Officer in Charge for the Marine Corps Portland, Oregon Recruiting Station.
- Commanded the 7th Marine Regiment as a Colonel
- Commanded the 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB) once he was promoted to brigadier general.
- Led Task Force 58 during the initial invasion of Afghanistan. The task force operated in the southern regions of the country.
- Commanded the 1st Marine Division as a major general during the 2003 invasion of Iraq; he was a key leader in the combat operations in Fallujah.
- During his tenure in the above position, he was well known for relieving senior officers who were underperforming or proved incompetent.
- Commanded the Marine Corps Combat Development Command once he was promoted to lieutenant general.
- Commanded the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF) in 2006.
- Appointed the commander of U.S. Joint Forces Command in 2007 and given a promotion to four-star general.
- Appointed the commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) in 2010.
- Retired from the Marine Corps in 2013.
- Worked for FWA Consultants after retirement.
- Serves as a Annenberg Distinguished Fellow at the Hoover Institution.
- Is a board member of the General Dynamics Board of Directors.
- Is a board member of the Silicon Valley biotech company Theranos.
- Graduate of the Marine Corps’ Amphibious Warfare School, Command and Staff College, and National War College.
- His nickname “Warrior Monk” comes from the fact that he has never married, has no children, and at one time had a library with more than 7,000 books/volumes in it.
- Other nicknames include “Mad Dog” and “Chaos.” “Chaos” is a reference to his call sign while a general in the Marine Corps.
