Good catch. I never stated their race. On purpose.

Sounds exactly what happened to me in NO. Me, wife and kids walking through French Quarter and come on a group of people on the sidewalk. They had 2 pit bulls, dreads, poor hygiene and all around trashy looking. We crossed the street instead of walking by them.

They were all white.

And given the scenario, I’d probably cross the street no matter what race they are

A white man and his wife are walking down a uncrowned Street at night and up ahead they see a small group of people wearing hoodies, sagging pants, gold chains and fancy sneakers.

The couple decides it’s best to cross the street.

Is that action racist? If so, why?

Yes. The Man and his Wife are making an assumption about the level of risk in interacting or passing in close proximity to a group of people based on their dress and appearance, probably assuming they are black. This is a natural and necessary human instinct, refined through many, many generations. That instinct increases survival and reducs thenneed for violent conflicts. It's also called "racism", which is of course heavily condemned by the same people who say things like "We must kill whiteness" and "White children must not be allowed to live in peace".
