I'm very conservative, except libertarian on most social matters. I would love to have a gun by my bed and in my car. I don't do it because I feel that the chances of negligence resulting in a grandchild getting hurt or killed is about as great as the chances that gun will come in handy.

It's a tough call for me. I know there are safeguards, like trigger guards and safes, but these also reduce the chances of accessing them in time to be useful. So far I've gone without. But as I get older and more feeble, and if the world becomes even less safe, the calculus will go the other way.
