I feel good about 2024

I am teaching summer school this morning and we are reading an article about how Edith Wilson basically took over the presidency after her husband, Woodrow Wilson, suffered a stroke.

One of the students chimed in with “That sounds like Biden.”

I normally shut political discussions down, since I teach English, but I let them go on for a bit. When I asked for clarification, the student said, “It sounds like Biden. He should not be our president.”

Another student added, “We need Trump. He was much better than Biden.”

When I asked him to explain why he felt this way, he said, “Look at the price of groceries and gas.”

The class began to respond in the affirmative and then we got back to the lesson.

Why is this significant?

This is a summer school class of eleven students where the majority of the students are special education students. Only two of the students on the room are white. Neither of the students I quoted were white. Neither of the white students made a sound during this impromptu discussion.

So, when students who struggle to read and write have it figured out, I believe America has figured it out.

Getting the machines out of the election will be difficult, but Trump is looking pretty good to my lowest functioning kids right now.
