Is it just a peculiar tradition?

Nope. Alberta had 4.3 million people and New Brunswick and Nova Scotia each have less than 1 million, while Alberta has 6 Senators and they both get 10.
Edit: Aw, shite. Got moved to the Poliboard.

Four regions of 6 each as set out in the Constitution Act plus 3 extra for each of the territories. Nothing to do with population at all.

Welllll…”simple” except that apparently Newfoundland is considered its own “region” and gets only 6 Senators itself.

Territories get 1.
Most provinces get a higher number by statute.
Quebec and Ontario get a ton based on population but the Maritimes get an outsized amount.
