Fun facts: the op-ed writer is from the Pacific Research Institute, which is funded by the Koch brothers and has been accused of attempting to “fabricate academic support for tobacco companies.” LINK
BAB, people here associate California with liberalism. Thus, any perceived failure by the state is passed off as proof positive that democrats are dumb. It’s just a silly way of saying that the GOP is always right and everybody else is ruining their country, despite the fact that the crucibles of GOP policy-in-action are the poorest, least healthy, least educated, and the most dependent upon federal subsidies (red states almost universally receive more federal tax funding than they contribute, making them leeches off the national tit, despite their “personal responsibility” mantra).
Let the flaming of my post begin!

Red states don't set federal policy, they only set their own state's policy. You can't blame red states if democrats grow federal welfare programs.

Arizona.
We are in the process of having liberals escape from states like California, then proceed to keep voting for the people that try and implement what they just escaped from.

Why does it bother you that Cal has such income inequity? It's at the bottom with La, Miss, Alabama and Massachusetts.

CA is 1.8 trillion in debt as well.

Extensive environmental regulations aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions make energy more expensive, also hurting the poor. By some estimates, California energy costs are as much as 50% higher than the national average. Jonathan A. Lesser of Continental Economics, author of a 2015 Manhattan Institute study, “Less Carbon, Higher Prices,” found that “in 2012, nearly 1 million California households faced … energy expenditures exceeding 10% of household income. In certain California counties, the rate of energy poverty was as high as 15% of all households.” A Pacific Research Institute study by Wayne Winegarden found that the rate could exceed 17% of median income in some areas.
Yea! Too bad if people can't afford energy, we're pretending to save the planet!

His belief is that people who don't feel like it can opt out of capitalism and be supported by the State
Which is reliant on capitalism for tax dollars

Culver's Butter Burger is damn good. McDonald's burger tastes like cardboard.

So being a worthless democrat, is what you are saying?
A worthless frick is what my Dad would have called them. My grandfather would have called them a word that would get me banned on here.
What we did wrong as a country is allow people to eat without earning their meal. We should let social Darwinism take over, for the good of our society.
Free food, free medicine, free utilities, free education, free phones , free bus rides and free money given to the lazy, stupid, unmotivated, drug abusers and useless all for votes to the Democrats. This pisses me off so bad. I have a kid that’s disabled and the government doesn’t give me a cent. Nothing. No free food, no free medical, nothing.
I’m not the right color. I’m not a guaranteed democrat voter. I pay for everything and the government only takes from me to give to useless illegals, the kids for useless illegal fricks here and hood rats because it helps their voting chances to gain power. They have ruined this country and one day they will have to pay for it.

I have eaten in two of them - one in Arizona and one in California. Neither was as good a Burger King.

That is just fine - Dilly Dilly for them. Now let them survive on the contributions from those who appreciate their 'art.' If they cannot make it, then they either need to improve their art, get a job, or starve to death. Makes no difference to me which they choose.
Just don't expect me to fund their dumb choices.

Not surprising with all of the illegals they have and they promote people being on welfare.

1/3 of the nations welfare recipients. Won't miss them at all if the form their on nation.

Are you stupid?
California is the ultimate example of a small middle class...it's have or have nots. Large upper class, large lower class, small middle class.
Tech Industry/Hollywood Industry/Fishing Industry
Have nots...Ag industry...it's is basically 30% of California's industry and yet contributes only 2% to the economy.
It's not profitable like Tech or others but employees thousands who live below the poverty line.
News flash, California has a huge Mexican immigrant population.
They pick your lettuce and your vegetables. California is called the "Salad Bowl of the World" - they produce everything you eat that isn't pork and cow.
If you had a bag salad pre-washed it came from California, if you had garlic in your meal or artichokes or an Avocado or All Fruits - it came from California.
Agriculture industry is a thin gain...that's why they want cheap migrant labor because the profits are not that high.
