Sounds like you're talking about EREV, Extended Range Electric Vehicle. This seems like the best of all worlds IMO. Basically an EV with the additional weight and cooling for a small gasoline generator, no transmission or added weight of transmission. Small to mid size battery for approximately 30 mile range. Also less weight than longer range EVs.
Charge battery at home. Take off in the morning. When battery gets low the generator kicks on and it operates at 1 of 3 steady state speeds. This helps with emissions and improves longevity and lower maintenance on the small ice.
Isn't this what the GM Volt was?
