The reason they won’t do this is it would destroy the lower middle class home owner. When the only asset in your family is your house, you need the step up. I don’t necessarily disagree with you, but that is the reason it will not happen. They may change the step up to only apply to non tangible assets. But that opens up a whole new can of worms.

I hate the irs. So much.

Make LTCG exclusion for primary home transferable at death? Or just keep the stepped up basis for primary residence only up to current exclusion level.

Just makes no sense I pay higher LTCG on my assets than heirs would.
