Saudi Royals Imprisoned At Riyadh's Ritz-Carlton Paying For Their Freedom

quote:

Saudi royals and businessmen detained in an anti-corruption crackdown are being being offered deals that trade large chunks of their wealth for their freedom, according to reports. Authorities are making agreements with some of those detained for them to hand over assets for their release, Reuters reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. At least one businessmen has signed an agreement and has had millions of Saudi riyals withdrawn from his bank account.

For some of the officials, the suggested deals are for as much as 70 percent of their wealth or assets in what amounts to a state-sponsored appropriation of funds from those suspected of corruption.

quote:

“They are making settlements with most of those in the Ritz,” an adviser of a multi-billionaire businessmen who is close to the negotiations told the Financial Times. “Cough up the cash and you will go home.” The purge included 11 princes, four ministers, and dozens of officials and businessmen. People arrested include billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, the nephew of King Salman and one of the world’s richest men with a net worth of around $18 billion, former Riyadh Governor Prince Turki bin Abdullah Al Saud and former Finance Minister Ibrahim al-Assaf.

Pay up and go free

How would this deter the upper echelon of the Gov't to stop their corruption in the future?

Removing the funding was always the key to the crackdown. I believe Saudi culture does not allow for princes to just be jailed or executed. Strip them of their funding and tell them to go away.

But our politicians would have you believe our primary foreign policy priority in that region is to spread democracy. What a crock.

Well, taking 70% is going to put a dent in their power. People do their bidding to get paid, no money = no power.

Look what it did to our huge Antifa Day, money dried up and no Antifa.

Strip them of their fortunes and there is nothing left. It’s not like these people got their wealth, status, and power though their own industry and cunning.

I don't think Saudis know what corruption is. It's impossible to separate normal business from bribery there.

These were enemies of the new prince and he's soaking them and tearing down their wealth networks so they can't oppose him.

No, they bought in. This wasn't about stopping corruption. It was about making a bold political move that looks just legitimate enough to regain some street credibility for the government that literally had to borrow money from Qatar to pay of its constituency at the threat of an "Arab spring" moment.

If by democracy, you mean leaders that ask, "how high?" when we say, "jump!", it's very accurate.

Democracy is fricking retarded that everywhere we spread it turns to shite.

It's funny listening to DOS hacks talk about democracy this, democracy that, as if there is some kind of evidence that democracy leads to better outcomes relative to virtually any other system of statehood.

You know full and well that's just a cover for exerting influence. In reality, they're big believers in technocratic management with a facade of democracy so they look like good boys and girls.
