Not sure when or in what branch you served, but I've been in for 21 years and it has always been the policy that you do not engage in political speech or protest in uniform. Do as you will in civilian attire, but not in uniform.

I’m beginning to look at senior military leadership like the FBI’s senior leadership. Too political, too swampy. I used to like Mad Dog Mattis but his turncoating on Trump was the last straw.

It's always been that way. once you make 06 its all politics to get that star, and then the next one. Generals/Admirals in the civil war were swampy, WWI, WWII, Korea etc. The top brass has always been a swamp.
EDIT: I just never thought Mad Dog who loved killing would be such a liberal twink when he retired. Old age made him soft!
