Here’s a question for you, bub. So a person steals $700 worth of stuff. Prison is a no go for you. What’s the penalty? A fine? You say these people are poor, so it’s just going to cycle into more crime.

A pat on the back and tell them it’s ok because it’s not their fault? Same result.

Prison at least keeps them off the street for awhile and might scare some straight. You’d be amazed at the number of people who learned their lesson and reformed themselves behind bars.

Oh the irony is soooo rich.

You want to know what authoritarian looks like? A single individual - District Attorney - who chooses to not enforce laws passed by a democratic elected government through a democratic legislative process.

This DA is effectively become lawmaker, judge, and jury.

Now THAT is textbook authoritarian.

Tom Herman needs to set up with a stopwatch in the Northpark Mall garage and time them when they run out the door. What a recruiting opportunity.

In Austin Texas they don't arrest people for anything under $100. You can sue them in a civil suit and they will still end up having to pay for it

What’s your address? I’m going to come steal $99 worth of stuff from you. You won’t mind though, bc Austin.

DAs have absolute prosecutorial discretion. They generally don’t make public pronouncements about which laws they’ll decline to enforce, but they certainly can decide which cases to prosecute.
