Yes, they WERE jews. Once they accepted Jesus as the Messiah and spread HIS gospel, they were Christians.
Jesus was crystal clear when he said no one comes to the Father except by Me. There's no grandfather clause of admittance for anyone else.

There's the jewish faith and jewish lineage...seed of Abraham. Those that are of the christian faith are still jews.
