A private Christian college in Missouri is rolling out a mandatory military science course aimed at encouraging patriotism, making it a requirement for all freshmen.
"We think there needs to be a more intentional program regarding our country and especially the military," College of the Ozarks President Jerry Davis told TIME on Wednesday. "We don’t think the military has been properly recognized, and students in general need to know more about the place of the military in the democracy."
The course, called Patriotic Education and Fitness, combines the school's prior physical education and patriotism requirements and adds more military training, such as rifle marksmanship, land navigation and ropes climbing. The course will also cover military customs and flag protocol.
I have no problem with it because it has been in their mission statement for many years.
The college strives "to encourage an understanding of American heritage, civic responsibilities, love of country, and willingness to defend it," according to its mission statement.

Awesome idea.
I'm a big fan of CofO and we are hoping our kids go there. The school does some really good things to prepare kids for real life.

Yep. They have trademarked Hard Work U.
At College of the Ozarks, we call ourselves "Hard Work U." That's because our work program sets us apart from nearly every other college in the country and lets us provide a distinctive education that will help you achieve your life goals and objectives.
At College of the Ozarks, you help to pay for your education in a way that actually enriches your learning! As a full-time student, either in residence or as a commuter taking 12 or more hours, you work 15 hours each week at your assigned campus work station. The work education program will involve you in one of over 80 diverse and fulfilling work areas. You'll find that your on-the-job experience gives you a significant competitive edge when you begin your career after college.
Your participation in the work program might mean spending 15 hours a week working in the Computer Center, Child Development Center, Ralph Foster Museum, McDonald Clinic, or in any of the 80 other work areas on campus. Although your studies and college work program job take priority, many students at "Hard Work U" find they are also able to earn supplemental income through part time employment with the many employers in nearby Hollister and Branson, Missouri.

Reading a terrain map is a pretty cool skill.
But I like...
Deep Springs University philosophy more.
I think you have to raise a couple of pigs as your annual meal, learn how to herd cows to pay for your education and build your own dorm room.

Are y'all from the area? We have been looking at property and will most likely move soon. Probably going to buy a smaller home while we look for land to build on.
Any recs on best areas to be or areas to avoid?

I would have said the same thing before Vespa Kitchen opened. That gives them a serious run for their money.

This is a great organization. It is close to Branson. We visited them when we were there a couple of years ago. It is an inspirational place. They run a restaurant that serves a fantastic meal in a great atmosphere. Students do all the work - from raising and preparing the food they serve to maintaining the facility. It is all run by the university alone, with students doing all the labor.
Most competent and polite service staff I have ever seen - it is heartening to see such self-sufficientousness and pride in a group of polite youngsters - reminds me of the culture I was raised in back in the 40s/50s.

Thanks for your elaboration - I loved the place but could not remember all the details which the wait staff at your restaurant told us when we asked.
It is refreshing to know that this germ of patriotism is still alive and well in this scummy cultural revolution that has been devastating our nation's tapestry.
