Its likely a little of both. I am not in favor of what you think Clear Cutting is. Clear Cutting is confined to certain areas not the whole mountain side.

Selective logging would work as well, the benefit to clear cutting is new meadows for the critters like elk which nothing beat glassing the edge of a meadow and seeing a big bull in the fall...
