If Cohen had anything that could be used to bring a criminal against Trump he would not be going to prison, he would have made a deal to testify, but Muller recommended Cohen receive a substantial prison term. That is not what happens to someone that you intend to be a star witness, sentencing would also come after Cohen's testimony as insurance against him changing his mind.
