This has been a concern of mine for years. Aside from nuclear war, the worst thing you could do to the U.S. would be to knock out the electrical grid.
These large transformers are apparently only made in two places, China and I believe Germany. Also, there was at least one of these transformers that was intercepted at port, and was found to have this “kill” switch installed. Both of these are huge issues for us.
The “Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack”
Released a report outlining a lot of this. The reason it wasn’t widely known about was because it was released the same day that the 9/11 Commission released its own report.

This is dumb. A transformer is the most basic electrical component. No electronics involved.
Now there are electronics in supplementary equipment. Protection relays and meters. But utilities are mostly buying Schweitzer from Pullman Washington for relays and meters.
Transformers have nothing to hack.
This reminds me of the Y2K scare, where I had to convince corporate that our coffee pots weren't going to explode after 1999.
