That's why I laugh when people say we are "checking" China by taking control of their oil. They could kill a lot of people here by shutting off the medication supply.
That's one of several reasons I laugh when people say our massive trade deficits are not a problem. We're dependent on foreigners for a large and growing number of critical things that we could manufacture ourselves. But bringing that production back home would be expensive and prices would rise, no matter what mechanism is used to accomplish that transition. So we will never do it voluntarily.
The only feasible route left to end our steadily increasing foreign dependence is an involuntary tax on imports, aka tariffs. But that would also cause prices to rise and the news media will tell us it's unacceptable; we must continue to depend on the kindness of foreigners. The paid shills, including some in our government, will say countries, like China, will never cut us off because they need us to survive. We'll continue to borrow, increase the money supply, spend, consume, bleed jobs and manufacturing aptitude, and become increasingly dependent. The siren song of excess consumption without the hassle of production is inescapable and that's how you surrender your sovereignty.

Essential Semiconductor Supply Chain: Spruce Pine, North Carolina, hosts rare mines that produce the world’s purest quartz. This material is not just for computer chips but specifically for the high-grade crucibles needed to melt silicon for wafers.
I wonder if Mamdani has any indirect influence on this.
Yes. Buncombe County North Carolina will continue to spread out with liberal northerner that keep coming south to try socialism in a new place.
Western North Carolina counties will become slightly purple and Environmental regulations will tighten. We have gold mines sitting under our feet, but regulations are the impenetrable barrier between us and them.
