Whatever you do, don't seek to gain information from CNN. Otherwise, they'll have you believing Trump is the puppet master behind the chaos.

We can assume Trump would have ensured we got all Americans and large scale equipment out first, but thinking the Taliban wouldn't have done the exact same thing the moment we left seems a bit silly.
It all could have been avoided, at numerous points in time. It was a very bad situation when I started diving into it in 2011, and it only got worse from there. The security forces that were trained were trained as though the US would be available to help forever. It was destined to fail once popular support for leaving was high enough. It's a strong argument against the sort of soft imperialism we've tried since WWII. No administration is likely to see out their FP goals or suffer the consequences of them by the time their tenure ends. In that sense, it would have been better for Trump to see out the moronic 'maximum pressure' campaign against Iran than go back into the JCPOA, when it's almost assured a Republican will leave the deal, which makes negotiations pointless. Given we've lost positions around Iran, the ever-present warhawks in their insane appeals to realism might conclude that building up the Taliban through supplying them arms is a good strategy to counter Iran, which would effectively be making the same mistake we've made several times all over again.
We also have an elite class who think the decisive air campaigns in the Balkans were actually instructive and could be applied elsewhere, rather than outliers that occurred due to circumstances we won't see ever again. Regimes we thought would wilt through sanctions alone haven't and we have a cottage industry of Washington morons, pumped up with foreign money, who insist the next sanctions round is the one that will do it.
For all the smarm of the think tank class, they almost assuredly always get it wrong. It's gotten so depressing to follow, because despite whatever military strength the US possesses, we use it like morons.

I am honestly clueless what's going on and what led to this.
One way or another Biden and his cronies will be paid handsomely and the US Troops and people still there are in serious trouble.

No truer words have been spoken. It's a result of hubris and unerring belief that they are the smartest people in the room, always.
The bad guys always have a vote. They seem to consistently forget this.

They always make the mistake of assuming what is good for them and their class is the same as reality. It's fan fiction for a small group of very rich people, and their courtiers. The longest lasting effect of the WOT is the creation of a cottage industry of 'Middle East experts' who are just writing what they think their patrons, Israel, the KSA and the UAE among them, wants to hear, with a good amount of fear-mongering about China and Russia. Add a bit of Aaron Sorkin-era liberal troll concerning, and you get a class that can't seem to swallow the reality on the ground.
They can't admit so many obvious things to themselves because they've made a profession out of this grift, and there is no turning back now.
