If the detail is just one guy with a gun at a time, a 24/7 detail takes at least people. Call it $80k a year per person and that's about $480k, call it $500k with overtime - and that's just salary. Add another $12k a year for two vehicle leases, a bucket for equipment, etc. I can see 24/7 protection for 1 person being $600k a year.
$2M does seem outrageous, but so does everything else in DC.
