A white “supremacist” generally believes the white race is naturally superior to others. A white "nationalist” generally wants a nation of white people.

White nationalist is just white supremacist repackaged.

I'd agree completely with King if he left out white supremacist.

nationalism (nash'?-n?-liz??m, nash'n?-)?

n.
Devotion to the interests or culture of one's nation.
n.
The belief that nations will benefit from acting independently rather than collectively, emphasizing national rather than international goals.
n.
Aspirations for national independence in a country under foreign domination.

Sorry you dont like the meaning.

True, but almost no racial "identity" group pushes for equality - they're all rooted in tribalism and "supremacy".

What I'm inferring is that - if it is okay for black folks to organize themselves along racial lines, or latinos, or East Asians, South Asians, Arabs, etc., then it should be okay for white folks.

Now, in our system, we should have stamped out these racial identity movements long ago. Either we recognize "race" in this nation or we don't. After the legislation of the 1960s we should endeavor - as much as possible - to ignore it in any official, documented way. Obviously, it is an issue with health care and extremely limited circumstances.

But other than that - Dr. King's standard should be the rule, not the exception. Content of character. Period.

However, I would suspect that would somehow be racist, too.

There is little wrong with benign nationalism. Almost nothing.

And if people would read his response to the NYT... they would understand what the NYT is doing.

He is pro USA and western values. Because he is white, he is being labeled as a white nationalist. He questioning is on why is being a white nationalist evil.

If the dems would push a false narrative and race bait we would not being havi g this discussion

Then stop race baiting. Stop making false and accusations about people. So what if he is white.

agreed, but so many people overlook the fact that “nationalism“ (like almost any other -ism) can be defined along a spectrum.

at the most benign end of that spectrum, nationalism is a very close cousin of simple patriotism. At the far end of that spectrum, it becomes an aggressive (and even dangerous) close cousin of supremacism.

I would submit that American nationalism lies at the benign end of that spectrum, for the most part. To see the other end of the spectrum, however, one need look no further than Serbia.

There is nothing wrong with being white (despite all hysteria to the contrary - that anti-white sentiment is literally racist). There is little-to-nothing wrong with being a "nationalist". The NYT is conflating, as you suggest, the mere fact of being white AND nationalist as being a "white nationalist". King's apparent failure to clarify that and add in things like white supremacist are the key problems with his statements.

Not the nationalism part. Or even his being white. Inarticulate language from a guy who is clearly not a "white nationalist" or "white supremacist".

i'm on Ben's side here. if King would've left out the white supremacist part it wouldn't be a big deal.

I’ve done nothing of the sort.

Your prior response also shows why they repackaged...they’re trying to hide behind that definition and fool people like you.

That's pretty fair. Scratch a Serb and you'll find a Slavic "Nazi" in most cases. A rare combination of language, religion, race and, to a degree, class all tied up in one movement.

And there are some Serbs I really like.

Yeah... you did. It's right there for all to read.

So let me walk you down the path of the world the left is creating. You keep pushing the racial tones and eventually we will see worse than the 60s.

You are creating a problem that is not there.
