I called him out as being the best candidate for Secretary of Defense.

Looks like the President agrees.

I'll be interested to see what attacks, if any, are levied against Mr. Carter.

About as good as they could do considering Jeh Johnson is a non-starter because of confirmation and several others flat out said no

I don't have a lot of faith in a defense secretary named Ashton. I think of Ashton Kutcher.

Considering the options, a good, safe pick. He will be roughed up a bit in the confirmation process simply because that is the nature of the beast. Should be confirmed with no (true) problems.

I have an attack for you. NO ONE gets confirmed until Obama obeys the law. NO appointments confirmed for ANYTHING.

This is a dumpster fire waiting to happen. Carter was number 6 or 7 on the list because he's NOT qualified.

When Hagel resigned, I saw him on every top 3 list people were putting out there.

Of anyone, he may be the MOST qualified. I was worried they would pick Fluorney over him because of the historical aspect. Luckily, she took her name out of consideration.

Of anybody that could have been chosen, Ash Carter is the most capable of jumping right in and serving off the final two years of this presidency.

The consensus where I work (in the DoD) is this is HORRIBLE. He has no military experience but has ENORMOUS experience as a bureaucrat that never makes a decision but blames others when the shite hits the fan. On a positive note I will say this......he's perfect for Obama.....a complete "yes man".

Not a single second in uniform. That never goes all that well with the troops.

On the other hand, seems mainly a non-partisan Democrat and extremely well educated. He will oversee a significant reduction in U.S. military spending and posture, after over a decade of war.

Not an easy job for which to sign on.

The DoD is a bureaucracy. Him being experienced in this is not a bad thing.

That is one of the most poignant criticisms of Obama that I actually agree with as a Dem - for all his great ideas, he had no idea how to actually get anything done as President. Too many moving parts and axles to grease that he seemed unaware of.

Question about where you work in DoD, do/did the people there like Cheney or Berger as Secretary of Defense?? It's not like they came in with military experience.

Everyone I've talked to in the area of DoD where I work seem to think he'll be at least adequate, and they aren't ones to typically like anything this President does.
