It’s actually from the erosion of the southern Appalachians. They’re granite-rich, so the sand is white.

It actually makes for some great sunsets. It also hampers tropical storm formation since it results in dry air, which isn't conducive to tropical storm formation.

You can actually see the dust plume over the Atlantic and into the Caribbean on satellite imagery.
