Dust from the Sahara Desert is heading for the Gulf of Mexico and Alabama

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - It’s that time of year again, folks! Dust from the Sahara Desert is becoming highly concentrated in the atmosphere across North Africa and the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

The huge plume of dust is beginning its yearly westward trek across the Atlantic Ocean. While the exact dates of the annual “Saharan dust migration” vary from year to year, mid-June is a very common time for it to occur.

By the time we get to June 23rd or so, the dry and dusty air will make it to coastal Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. While it won’t be overly dense, some areas of locally higher dust concentrations will probably exist.

Doesn’t this dust drift also effect, or worsen, tropical storm formation?

Does this actually cause issues in the south? Genuinely curious. What are the costs of the damage this causes annually?

Has anyone here ever been personally affected by this?

Wait - how are we supposed to feel?

1. This is great, because we should celebrate anything and everything native to Africa, or

2. This is terrible, because we're stealing native soil of Africa, and we need to pay them for the theft, or

3. Blame Global Warming(tm)?

The dust helps build beaches and suppresses tropical storms because of the dry air.

Apparel the dust leads to pretty sunrises and sunsets too.

Didn’t know this was an annual event. Must be a thing to tie to trump now.

On the islands we see a benefit. Less hurricanes.

That's actually going to help apparently as it might kill TC formation in the gulf for a while.

This is so stupid.
The dust happens all of the time.
The Amazon rainforest attributes a lot of its ecology to the dust from Africa.

The internet just likes to start shite

Seems I have heard of this in numerous years.

It would not be solely Alabama; all regional states should experience it though Alabama gets most.

Seem to recall that it happens so much that our soils are amended and made more arable and bountiful.
