Are available jobs that go unfilled ever calculated into an economic indicator?

Just curious because there has never been a lack of Help Wanted signs in my area.

I think somewhere there is a jobs inventory stat that tries to track open positions.

It's a hard number to gather, if I remember, because there's nothing like tax returns or payroll filings for jobs that haven't been filled. So they use proxy data like positions listed on major job boards, employer surveys, and other some such sources.

They want help, not need it. If they needed it they would pay more and the positions would get filled. That’s how the free market works.
