Diesel–electric locomotive, the GP9 is not started in production until 1954 and ended in 1963 It took years to replace the stream engines, in fact the last real fireman on our railroad retired in the year 2000, hiring on the railroad in 1949.
That is not near 30 years with a fireman, as the fireman position is done away with by agreement around 1975, with the last fireman retiring around 2010 on our railroad.
So, you're looking at less than 15 years not 30. And that depends on what railroad and where.
Famous fireman on the railroad Martin Luther King Jr.
Railroads have contacts that they cannot break at the time, so the fireman spot lasted until the agreement around 1975.

I've literally heard a lot of lab techs, operators, etc claim they can "bring home less" if work OT. They actually think tax bracket if applied to all income.

The best story I know on the railroad is when they made "Oh Brother Where Are Thou?"
One of my friends at the railroad was the conductor of the train used in the movie. The conductor and the engineer are in the siding waiting on time when the crew needed them to move. The soundman is out recording sounds about half a mile away, the engineer sees him and said to the conductor I wonder what that dumbass is doing. The soundman slowly walks towards the engine recording sounds the whole time. He gets on the engine and ask them to make train sounds so he can record them. They tell him no problem will do, and the soundman starts back out the door, and stops and turns around and said, "By the way I am not a dumbass".
