Aluminum Tariffs and Job Creation

Serious question. If the tariff's are creating these jobs that seem to be dominating the board's topics today. When the tariff goes away does the job go away also? Is the tariff's purpose to make the US product capable of competing with cheap Chinese product? Whats the end game do the Chinese raise there prices therefore making the US product attractive. What happens if the tariff is ending and these jobs go away again?

Aluminum and steel manufacturers know that as long as Ross is in office they will have protection from competition and can operate as an oligolopy screwing their downstream manufacturing customers and ultimately the American consumer.

Why do you hate American made products? Because you like cheap crappy Chinese metal?

Tariffs don’t create jobs.

I spent 3 summers in college working for a steel mill in Texas as a summer help pouring steel. Spent my first 2 years out of college working for a cement mill in the same town. The steel tariff's are directly impacting my hometown in great ways right now. I am just wandering does it continue when the trade war stops?

I wasn't responding to you but IB Chinaman, but if the tariffs put American steel mills on a more equal footing with cheap Chinese steel, I'm all for it.

Let me spare you the suspense - 95% of this board has no clue how tariffs work. All they know is that Trump is for them, so they should be for them too. They've got zero ability to have a discussion on the topic other than "muh tariffs."
As to your question, the steel and aluminum tariffs are essentially stop gap measures. Trump's gains with respect to trade have come from more favorable terms for US exports. We're much more likely to come out of these negotiations with better export deals (lower tariffs on US products in these countries) and in return we drop the tariffs on imports here.
ETA - I believe it's unlikely to result in long-term gains in the American steel and aluminum industry. I think they're just a pawn being used for more favorable export deals.

Why do you hate letting negotiations play out?

What's free about it? Chinese steel sells for pennies on the dollar and is crap compared to American steel.

So what's the problem? If people need American quality, they'll pay for it. If they want to roll with the cheap stuff, so be it.

Just be glad you're not an American manufacturer that's had it's trade secrets stolen and copied by the Chinese and selling your product on the market for pennies when it cost you dollars to make.
