On January 27, ABC World News aired a segment on kids and guns in which they placed two unloaded handguns on a table and drew children to them by telling them there was candy where the weapons were.

Diane Sawyer introduced the video as part of a report on "groundbreaking news" based on a Yale University study on "American children and guns" that claims every hour one child in America ends up in the hospital as a result of gunshot wounds.

quote:

Sawyer's co-host David Muir narrated an experiment at an elementary school in Florida where seven hidden cameras were set up in what appeared to be a first grade classroom. They showed the kids NRA Eddie Eagle videos on gun safety and had a policeman talk to them about avoiding guns.

They then placed two unloaded handguns on a table "and [told] the kids they [were] there for a memory test." The teacher then told the kids she had to leave the classroom "for a second, but that there [was] candy on the table." There were numerous toys and crayons on the table, as well.

After the teacher left the children alone in the room for approximately ten minutes, two of the kids who had migrated to the candy, crayons, and toys picked up one of the real handguns and looked at it from all angles.

I guess to mock the Eddie Eagle safety program.

I can't imagine why kids would pick up guns, left beside candy, when told to help themselves to the candy and left unattended.

Next weeks episode - Bring a man to the edge of death with dehydration, then put a bag of saltine crackers on the table, and beside it, a glass of water laced with cyanide. Let's see what he chooses!

well I'm convinced. Clearly children shouldn't be left unattended with firearms.

Glad we cleared that up.

You know, I like the concept of the Eddie Eagle deal. as long as NRA members are the only ones who have to pay to support it, I am all for it.

This whole "skit" that ABC pulled sounds like a sketch comedy routine. I would bet if dig hard enough you could find a routine that closely resembles it.

Warning, somewhat unrelated:

The sad part to me is that the mentality that accepts that kind of garbage as meaningful is extremely feminine and emotionally driven. I can understand and in some ways applaud a mother watching that, cringing, overreacting, and general losing her sense of reason. Unfortunately, I meet more and more men who exhibit this kind of sensational behavior. Very disappointing.

Why do you think liberals and the media push gay men so hard?

Truth. It's because common sense is being lost in the general public nowadays. Look at what's going on in town right now. Thousands of people stranded, and not even prepared for cold weather. How hard is it, in the winter, to put a couple blankets, change of clothes and a little water in your vehicle for emergencies. Some, not even dressed for cold. Wouldn't have been prepared for even a flat.

People, while perhaps being educated, have been dumbed down in the basics of life.

It really is unfathomable. We have negated most of the stressors that force adaption and basic reasoning.

This is the same kind of thinking that has removed traditions and ways of thinking that have persisted for 1000s of years: Hazing/initiation rituals, honesty, etc.

Yes. Feminine characteristics have prevailed. Total loss of balance.

So I take it you're on bored with my campaign to repeal the 19th amendment?

I see this all the time on TV. It's rather frustrating. Look at every commercial on TV. The man or father or husband is portrayed as doofus and the women is the hero or smart one. Every. Single. One. Seriously!! Who here thinks a woman could drive a car at 80 mph through traffic then up a ramp and jump on to the top of a moving train?

Well they end with:

"The camera then panned back to Muir and Sawyer in the studio, and Muir suggested parents ask their neighbors if they have "a gun in the home" and "whether it's locked, loaded, or put away."

So my guess is to make guns scary to all but gun owners and to make it look like they are irresistible to children. Because then we can start to pass more common sense gun control legislation to get these killing machines away from our children. It. Is. For. The. Children.

Yes.

I guess I think ole Colonel Jessup said it best:

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a (WO)man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it.

I respect women, but I know their limitations. I also know that if I am expected to be a provider thick or thin, both legally and morally, then I shouldn't have to vote against women.

Yeah the doofus man and the wife who rolls her eyes and "puts up with his antics". My favorite stereotype. Also, I am considering revoking driving privileges from females as well. I am willing to take opinions on that issue.

Main issue with this is that they used real guns. It's always the "unloaded" gun that causes the accidents. That shite is still dangerous.

My pleasure. Pay attention to the part about women voting.

A man for the field,
A woman for the hearth.
A man for the mind,
A woman for the heart.
All else confusion.

My wife is a college grad and a professional. She agrees with almost all of it.
