After graduating LSU in 08, I taught inner city English in Tulsa. 11th grade English.
My first day on the long term sub position (Jan-April), I was told I could not assign the kids reading assignments. Reminder, these kids were in 11th grade. So, I read to these kids every day. Same book(s), for each class period.
Twice a week, a special teacher would get the class and I, we would go to a separate class and they would “teach” these kids the standard tests that funding/no child left behind were tied to. Funding and control were obv tied to these tests as well, obv.
These kids weren’t dumb, but they were functionally illiterate. And, they knew their options were drug dealing/welfare. It was incredibly depressing. The situation has a zero chance of improving, as it’s cultural.

Isn't the focus on homosexuality and gender identity in urban public schools?
