I have visited three of those states and lived in one... I can live with never going back.

MN has the nicest people in the world. The state is also full of natural beauty.... not sure why anyone would be against that. You should visit in the summer and your view may change. Duluth is a kick arse city as well! Tons of wilderness, camping, fishing, canoeing etc.
