These studies should be looked at through the lense of who did the study.
Most of the "studies" ranking states are done out of industry centers or think tanks from the Northeast.
When I return home I find the area to be depressed and angry and can't wait to get back south - anecdotal, yes but the fact is the Northeast has a major drug and suicide issue that is being ignored and unreported. Depression and depression meds have skyrocketed.
The major and mid level cities put forth a facade of success and goodness, but there is a dark underbelly that is the realty. It is hard for me to identify an old friend, acquaintance or relative that is not directly connected to multiple suicides or drug overdoses. All the old cultural neighborhoods have been bought up by foreign investors (China town, little italy, Irish and Jewish conclaves, Black etc) Most people can't afford to live in the area and are force to live out in the surrounding towns and commute in. One friend told me it is like the Italian section is an Epcot village where the people you see are day workers who do not live there anymore because they can't.

This is like the Reddit claim that 60 year old divorced liberal women are the happiest demographic because they get to drink wine and travel without being tied down
You have to suspend literally everyone’s common negative interactions with these miserable old birds to believe this stuff
