I have a 2006 Silverado with the 5.3 that has 285,000 miles. It is obviously time for a new truck and I will likely get the same thing when I buy again because my current truck has been very dependable.
Has anything changed in the 5.3 between 2006 and now? 20 years and they should have the kinks worked out…

Yes there’s been some changes, but I’m not 100% on the details. I had 212K on my 2008, currently have 185K on my 2012 that I’m about to sell. I think the most important thing is dexos quality synthetic oil and changing it every 5K miles.
My latest 5.3 is a 2021 and I just found out GM switched to 0w-20, which I assume is to meet fuel mileage requirements. I plan to run 5w-30 in it though.
They have been great engines in my experience, even in spite of AFM.

I'm in the market as well. Deciding between a '23 Chevy with 3.0L Duramax or 5.3L and a 2023 Tundra. Had Ram that everything fell apart around it but the Hemi, and I've just hated every Ford I've ridden in...just not for me.
Regardless everything sucks these days so its...do I deal with the lifters and possibly a transmission taking a crap in the 5.3L...or the DEF/Tranny in the 3.0L.
Or do I deal with the Engine issues with Toyota.
It seems like Toyota is pumping out Recalls and TSBs to fix the problems where GM just this week won a class action against 800k owners regarding their transmissions.
Leaning towards the Tundra. I can pick up one with 35k, which might have worked through the debris issues. Let the current crate engines wither down until they get the manufacturing process perfect and then pick up a new one after another year if it makes it. Some are making over 100k...saw one the other day on YT with 200k+ on the OG engine

The 5.3 is a great engine. The late 20teens had the transmission issues with the 8 speed. The 10 speed is better and not seeing as many problems. I have a 22 F150 with the 5.0 currently with 65k miles and the only issue I've had is the sunroof drain track got stopped up. I thought about getting the Livernois tune to help the transmissions shift points, but that's about it. Have a 6 inch lift and 35" KO3's and get about 17mpg.
