a dog with about a half of a hen turkey left in it's mouth.. they are about 200 yards away...
dog stops.. plays with turkey carcass eats a bit.. then comes even closer...

I generally agree, but feral dogs can be dangerous.
So can people who take a gun into the woods and shoot anything without a collar.
Had a good friend of the family lose a family pet this week. Lab got out of his yard... didn't have a collar on, and some douchbag shot him - THREE TIMES.
Now, obviously the dog should have had a collar on, and was being mischievous... but try rationalizing that to the 8 year old boy whose dog it was. All he knows is that "his dog" who he loved was shot by some fig who was mad because his deer hunting was messed up for one day.

I've never shot a dog but I think I might in this case.

Think about the little boy who was walking through the woods and gets killed by a random dog with no collar.

I'd love to, if you can point me to a real life situation where that has occurred recently?

way to be a part of the problem...
A couple months ago you guys discussed the Cougar. There was a story about a cop that shot one in I think Bossier that was wandering around a populated area and some had talked about seeing them in the wild in Louisiana. Anyway, the general consensus was that it's a fricking magical honor to experience seeing one of these and that no one would ever shoot one unless put in a shite your pants its about to kill me scenario.
Im not necessarily standing up for this potentially wild pure bred pit bull, but speaking against the ignorance of the OP who was trying to use the fact it was a pit bull and therefore inherently more threatening than any other dog.
Anyway, point is the OB lets the apex predator walk, but the dog/potential pet who does not understand leases and property lines dies every time. If you're preaching safety where the consistency?

Here are a few facts about pit bulls, some of which may surprise you:
* Despite what some people believe, pit bulls actually make great pets for families. In tests done by the American Temperament Test Society, pit bulls were generally less aggressive when faced with confrontational situations that produced negative reactions out of many other stereotypically "friendly" dog breeds, such as beagles and poodles.
* Early in the 20th century, pit bulls were actually the No. 1 family dog.
* Dog fighters use pit bulls breeds because they are strong, agile and have a desire to please their owners. Unfortunately, pit bulls' abuse in this circumstance contributes to the negative myths surrounding them.
* While many pit bulls are trained to be "animal aggressive," this does not mean they are also "human aggressive." These behaviors are completely separate and can be adjusted through proper socialization and training. LINK

So
Oh, I agree 100%. However, the OP had the "turkey in the mouth" caveat. The dog in his post sounded dangerous at most and a nusiance at least.
I had a friend who had two Siberian Huskies. One day his dogs got out of his house, so he set out to find them. Turns out one of his neighbors shot them thinking they were wolves (in Baton Rouge off O'Neal when this was in BFE). This guy skinned them and had their hides tacked up on the wall of his barn.

you read this and are like. "yeah see a dog attacked a 2 year old, they should kill all dogs." I read that and think, "where the frick are this 2yo's parents and why is he in a situation where he is interacting alone with a dog?" I doubt the 2yo was playing in the sandbox supervised and the dog just ran up and attacked the 2yo.

that is the only place - i have ever heard or read that..I have sense enough not to believe everything on the web....
if one came near me or my kid or one of my dogs in the woods.. I would take what i deem to be appropriate action.
don't trust the breed and 95% of their owners.

4yr attacked, while walking home, with AUNT
I don't think all dogs should be killed. I'd be pissed if someone shot one of my beagles while I was rabbit hunting. However, in the woods if it doesn't look like a pet or shows aggression at all then boom goes my gun.
