It is the long piece of metal that is along side the screws in the picture. It is used to engage both inside and outside handles/buttons simultaneously to unlatch the door.

I have an issue of I need to replace the handle, but the kits for that handle are only for storm doors thinner than 1 and 1/4", and my door is thicker than that.

So, to use ALL new parts I would need an extra long metal tab you see there.

What is that called?

TIA!

Johnson rod

I have no idea but isn't it just a flat bar? Could you fabricate it out of some stock metal that the hardware stores carry? I doubt you're going to find just that extra long part for sale anywhere.

You probably cannot get just that part, but if you go to your local hardware store (not big box, the family owned neighborhood one) with the piece and an explanation, they'll help you figure out a solution. Guaranteed.

I think it's called a spindle

ETA: but there are different types of door handle spindles...door knob spindles, latch spindles, etc.

Contact the company that made the door; they'll know where to get a replacement handle
