Nylon rope, 5 eye hook, chicken gizzard. Tie line to a stick. Push stick deep into mud, drop bait to the bottom. Wait two hours, check line.

I'm fishing in the most ridiculous places ever imagined. Can't give away all my secrets as to exactly where, but I guarantee there are snappers within a mile of your place in St. Amant.

Look for small spots of disgusting stagnant water.

I don't want secrets. I have a bayou running right by my house! If I can pull a few out u would be welcome to come.

The secret isn't a certain place. It's a certain type of place. Nasty stagnant water, covered in duck weed or lillies. The more leeches the better. My turtles have been covered in leeches. Turtles also like water above 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

The bayou is gonna be too big. Too many other critters to steal your bait, water moves too fast, and water is too cold.

Find places the bayou splits off, like into a drainage ditch and fish the hole where the two meet.

I have one big slew that drains into the bayou one a big rain. Looks like that might be it. I need to go down the bayou and find a few more. Thx W

Yep, that's where at least one will be. Look for the connections to and away from bayou.

Snappers sit in the hole waiting for something to get fed into hole.

I've been amazed where I've caught them. Fish in a barrel mentality.

Loving this thread. Keep us posted W.

A 10 pound snapper is not a bad size at all. They furnish well. I think it's about 50%.

I'd posted a thread on cleaning one a while back. Not sure what process you use but if you're curious it's out there. I'd be interested in hearing your technique.

so you're letting the bait sit on the bottom? and not hanging it above the water?

great thread.

I am fairly thick skinned when it comes to killing and cleaning critters, why is it that the thought of cleaning turtles freaks me out, I would have to drink a few and have some dudes around so I could just get after em.

Serious question, do snapping turtles tolerate any salt content in their water?

It's prime time. We may want to throw a few lines too.
I use some poly wire that we use for electric fences. You can cover a lot more ground when in a new area. I would have no idea where to start at C lake.

"At the bottom" of or just submerged in water plants. Keeps the fish from getting it.

I cleaned them almost exactly like the thread you posted. Your post was very helpful. Only thing I didn't do is remove the breast plate, but my two didn't have enough shell meat to even worry about.

I read that the turtles are bottom feeders, so I always sink the bait.
I caught another Sat. and am keeping him alive until I get a second one. I'll more pics later today.

ETA: I also spared the bullet and dropped them in the boil alive. They splashed longer than I thought they would in a rolling boil.

Sauce piquant (from two pictured earlier):

Well you've already caught as many turtles as I have.

I started late last summer and am still learning. Have only gotten to set nets once this year and was a bit early. I'm going to try to soon.
